It's Raining on It's Playtime

Some of you have snow right now but here on It's Playtime, we have rain.  This weeks features were both inspired by the book The Rain Came Down by David Shannon.

It's Playtime: Old Concepts, New Tricks

I love when I find a new way to use an old concept don't you?  So often we come across the same old thing all over the interent and while it may be a good idea (thus everybody doing it), sometimes it's nice to go, "Oh wow!  Why didn't I think of that?  I do that activity all the time and if only I had changed it ever so slightly...."  You get my point, right?  That's what's going on this week on It's Playtime!

Looking at this picture from Play Create Explore you might think, "oh, that's cloud dough," but not quite.  This Fluffy Stuff is a slightly different recipe.  Use it and create your own summer snowball fight!

At this point I think we all know what a water wall is, right?  Why not take the same concept and create a bead/ball run like the Russian blogger from The World of My Dreams...Lizon.org did?  She used plastic bottles to create a Rotating Ball Game, fun for grown-ups and kids alike.

 Puddles are for jumping and it can be fun to create Art in the Rain, but why not use some dried Tempura and create some Rainbow Puddles?  This fun idea from Play Create Explore will have your kids excited to mix some colors and create outdoor art.

It's Playtime: Get Outdoors!

Rain or shine you'll find It's Playtime! pals enjoying the outdoors.  Check out these great activities sure to get you and your kids outside! 

I love Forest Tots!  What kid wouldn't enjoy an outdoor preschool/playgroup experience in the woods?  They even play in the rain!  Last week they shared Parachute Games with Water.  Bless them for not being afraid of a little rain and using it in play.  My kind of families!    

 How about some good, clean, messy fun?  Play Create Explore shared their Saving Cream Slip-n-Slide.  You don't even need a real slip-n-slide for this fantastic activity!  

Looking for something less messy or wet?  Beautiful Somehow shared their Clothesline Play which combined fine motor practice with a quiet outdoor activity.

Art in the Rain

On Labor Day, San Diego was given a special treat.  A rare, summer storm passed through our city bringing us thunder and rain.  Growing up, my parents and I spent many summer vacations in southern Texas where summer storms were common.  My great aunt and uncle have a house on the Guadeloupe River and my cousins and I would stare out the window over the river and watch the lighting.  When the lighting ceased, we would play in the warm rain, smelling the earthy smell that only rain can bring.  Here in San Diego, summer storms pass quickly bringing a couple rumbles of thunder, simply to announce it's arrival, and about 10 minuets of rain.  Our storm this past week lasted a little longer, mostly clouds and humidity, but a little rain on and off for about 24 hours.

The moment it started to rain, I checked for lighting, then grabbed my son and told him we were going to play outside; I knew we didn't have long.  Then the idea hit.  We would create art with the rain!  I'd seen rain painting on another blog months ago (I'm sorry, I don't remember whose it was) and had been waiting to try it.  I grabbed some white paper, dry Kool-Aid, and a popsicle holder, and ran outside to play.

We used the popsicle holder to house the various colors of Kool-Aid.  My son was able to grab pinches of the powder and sprinkle it onto his paper. 

Then he set the paper out in the rain.  The rain drops wet the powder creating a vibrant splatter pattern.  

Michel made a 2nd picture, this time he tried dumping the powder.  He was surprisingly careful.  

For the 3rd picture, we wet the paper first, then Michael finger painted with the Kool-Aid.  

 He dumped the remainder of the powder onto the paper which created little mounds for him to spread around.  

Now it's messy!

Of course he had to eat some of it!

Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd paintings.

Michael became bored of painting and found some mud to enjoy.  So we turned that into art too!

I figured I might as well join him.

We made prints on the driveway as well.

As quickly as it appeared, the rain was gone.  But, we enjoyed a good 20 minuets outside together in the fresh, clean air.  Playing in the rain is good for the soul.

It's raining in San Diego, so this weeks It's Playtime features rainy day type activities. So pull out those extra blankets, find yourself a flashlight, and keep your sanity on a rainy day!

We don't see too many rainy days in Southern California but during the past few rain falls my kids have enjoyed activity courses...

And forts.

Sense of Wonder took their fort to the next level by using cardboard boxes to create a cave for spelunking.

The family at Chadwicks' Picture Place created Indoor Hopscotch with a Yoga Mat.  Great for little hoppers and counting practice!  

And art is always a great rainy day activity!  Especially the kind that is edible like the Marshmallow and Toothpick Sculptures over at Smiling Like Sunshine.
